Forgotten Giants WR Manningham delivers (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—No more hot seat for Tom Coughlin. No more second-guessing. The 65-year-old Coughlin made NFL history on Sunday, becoming the oldest coach to win a Super Bowl by guiding the Giants to a 21-17 victory over New England for his second NFL championship in four years

Singer M.I.A. makes obscene gesture (AP)

The NFL and a major television network are apologizing for another Super Bowl halftime show. There was no wardrobe malfunction, nothing like that glimpse of Janet Jackson’s nipple eight years ago that caused an uproar and a government scrutiny. Instead, it was an extended middle finger from British singer M.I.A.

Missed chances doom Pats in Super Bowl (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—The New England Patriots’ three star receivers couldn’t make the big plays when they needed them. Neither could their superstar quarterback. There was plenty of blame to go around in the Patriots’ second Super Bowl loss in four years, both to the New York Giants.

Manning drives Giants past Pats again (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)— Tom Brady let his final pass fly toward the scrum of players in the end zone, hoping for an incredible finish. Uh-uh, Tom. Not in this city, and not in this game.

Eli Manning wins second Super Bowl MVP (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Back in August, back before the season began, Eli Manning was asked whether he considered himself an “elite” quarterback a la Tom Brady. Manning replied simply that he belonged “in that class.” He was questioned and criticized for that, and—shocking, right?—it all became quite a big deal in New York.

14 arrests made at UMass-Amherst (AP)

BOSTON (AP)—Hundreds of officers who lined the streets of Boston had little to do as fans quietly mourned their team’s Super Bowl loss Sunday night, but 14 people were arrested across the state at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst when police in riot gear dispersed a rambunctious crowd. “We’re really sad right now,” said Molly Mackenzie of Boston, who was watching at a bar near Fenway Park with two friends as the Patriots lost the NFL championship to the Giants for the second time in five years. “It was a good game, really close.” Boston officers focused on the areas near college campuses and sports bars, where previous celebrations had turned wild

Kraft’s emotional ride ends in defeat (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Robert Kraft stared at the scoreboard, to see if time really had run out. It had. In a game that meant so much, his New England Patriots had come up a fingertip or two short.

Woodhead plays big in Super Bowl defeat (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—For a moment, no one was bigger than 5-foot-8 Danny Woodhead. The New England running back’s 4-yard touchdown reception in the final minute of the first half gave the New England Patriots a 10-9 halftime lead in the Super Bowl. “I was able to get open, and Tom (Brady) did a good job of putting the ball right on me,” he said

Fans erupt into cheers in New York (AP)

NEW YORK (AP)—The repeat performance was just as good as the first for New York Giants fans as they watched their team again beat the New England Patriots 21-17 Sunday in the Super Bowl. In Times Square, fans spilled out of the numerous sports bars in the area yelling “Giants! Giants! Giants!” As motorists drove by, some people yelled “Giants” out their windows and passers-by roared and waved their Eli Manning jerseys. Police officers tried to keep pedestrians from overcrowding the street corners, but groups of people loitered at every corner high-fiving anyone in Giants blue and white.

Goodell: NFL could eliminate Pro Bowl (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says he is disappointed in the quality of last week’s Pro Bowl and changes must be considered, perhaps even dropping the game altogether. Speaking on ESPN Radio, Goodell says this year’s Pro Bowl wasn’t “the kind of football we want to be demonstrating to our fans, and you heard it from the fans, the fans were actively booing in the stands.” Goodell made his remarks on Sunday, hours before the start of the Super Bowl. Goodell has spoken to the NFL Players Association about his disappointment, adding, “We are going to either have to improve the quality of what we are doing in the Pro Bowl or consider other changes, or even consider eliminating the game if that is the kind of quality of game we are going to provide.” The AFC won the game 59-41
