NHL tackles concussion epidemic head-on
In mid-November, Brendan Shanahan, the NHL vice president for player safety, reported that concussions were down almost 50 percent from the same period in 2010, a “significant improvement” he attributed to increased player awareness about the kinds of hits that cause head trauma and the enforcement of new rules against such hits. But now the NHL has a concussion outbreak on its hands. By late Friday, 23 players were on the sidelines, all listed with concussions or concussion symptoms
Blackhawks coach gets 600th NHL victory
CHICAGO (AP)—Chicago coach Joel Quenneville became the 10th coach in NHL history to earn 600 victories as the Blackhawks beat the Calgary Flames 4-2 on Sunday for their fifth straight win. Chicago also vaulted past Minnesota into first place in the NHL standings with a league-leading 46 points
