Dutch hopes grow for 125-mile speedskating race (AP)

THE HAGUE, Netherlands – While sports events across Europe fall victim to the deep freeze, the Dutch are welcoming the drop in temperatures, hoping that the revered “Eleven Cities” speedskating race can be staged later this month for the first time in 15 years. The race, held along a 125-mile (200-kilometer) network of canals connecting 11 towns and cities in northern Friesland province, would cause a national frenzy, drawing thousands of participants and more than a million spectators. It was last held in 1997.

Texas A&M fires football coach Mike Sherman (AP)

Mike Sherman was fired as Texas A&M’s coach Thursday after the Aggies finished the regular season a disappointing 6-6. Athletic Director Bill Byrne announced the move in a statement. Sherman, 25-25 in four seasons at A&M, had three years remaining on his contract and the buyout will be about $5.8 million.
